Craig Armstrong OBE

Composer & Musician

Craig Armstrong OBE is an internationally acclaimed Scottish composer whose distinctive voice has shaped both contemporary film and classical music. Born in Glasgow in 1959, he studied composition and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London under Cornelius Cardew, Paul Patterson, and Malcolm MacDonald, later becoming a Visiting Professor at the Academy.

From his Glasgow base, Armstrong has composed for some of the most celebrated films of the past three decades. Armstrong’s work has received worldwide acclaim and numerous major honours, including two BAFTA Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, a Golden Globe, a Grammy, and an American Film Institute Award. He was recognised with the Scottish BAFTA Outstanding International Achievement Award, the Herald Angel Award and was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the music industry.

Beyond film, Armstrong has composed concert works for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Hebrides Ensemble, and Scottish Ensemble. His solo albums, released on Massive Attack’s Melankolic label and EMI Classics, showcase his ability to fuse the cinematic with the personal. Through his orchestral writing, electronic compositions, and cross-genre collaborations, Armstrong continues to redefine the boundaries of modern composition — a rare artist whose work unites critical acclaim, emotional resonance, and cultural reach.
